What Happens in a Counseling Session in Ft. Myers, FL?

Phone Call: Once you call or email me, I will ask you a few questions to determine if I might be able to help you with your concerns.  If I determine that I am not be the best counselor for you, I will give you referrals to someone who has more expertise to help you.  Once we decide that we would like to work together, we will schedule your first appointment, usually within 24-48 hours of your call.

 

First Appointment: You will need to arrive 10-15 minutes early to your first session to fill out general background information, or I will email you the forms in advance and you can bring them with you.  We will discuss your counseling goals and treatment options and determine if this is a good fit and if I would be the best counselor to help you. If we decide not to work together, I will give you other referrals.  If you are a parent bringing your adolescent to therapy, you have the option of coming alone to the first appointment, or bringing your teenager with you. You will receive an assessment that measures anxiety, depression, anger and other issues. You will receive the results at your second session and used to measure your progress each month.

 

Welcome Gift: At your first appointment, you will receive a welcome gift containing useful articles, stress management tools, and a notebook/journal that you can use during our counseling sessions. 

 

Additional Counseling Appointments: During your first appointment you will be given an assessment that measures depression, anxiety, anger, and other concerns. We will discuss this evaluation at your second appointment. The assessment will be used as a diagnostic tool and will be given each month to measure progress. Counseling sessions will address techniques and strategies for achieving your goals and solving your problem.  I often recommend books or assign other homework so that you can continue working outside of our weekly sessions.  I will also make referrals to any appropriate professionals.  We will periodically address counseling goals and progress.  If at any time you feel that you would like to terminate counseling, please let me know.  If you would like referrals to another therapist, I will be happy to assist you. 

 

 

How Much Does Counseling Cost?

Counseling sessions last 50-55 minutes and the cost is just $125 per session. Payments can be made by cash, check, credit, debit and medical debit cards. Group counseling sessions are $50 for 60 minutes. Workshops are $25 per person, with a 10 person minimum. Because I want to keep your sessions completely confidential for you, I choose not to participate in network with any insurance companies because they require you to have a mental health diagnosis/disorder and they dictate your treatment plan. As an out of network provider you and I determine together the best treatment plan for your issue, and more time is invested in face to face counseling, not paperwork and billing. Payment is accepted by cash, check, Visa, and Mastercard.  You can use your medical debit cards for payment.

 

How Long Will I Need To Come to Counseling?

Most people need at least 8-10 sessions to address their concerns, and many find it helpful to continue counseling for up to one year or more.  We will periodically address your counseling goals and progress.  If at any time you feel that you would like to terminate counseling, please let me know.  If you would like referrals to another therapist, I will be happy to assist you. 

 

 

Do You Work With My Insurance?

I am not in network with any insurance because I prefer that you and I make the decisions about your therapy, not your insurance company.  You and I decide how often we meet, the purpose and goals of your counseling, and you will not have to have a mental health diagnosis/disorder in your permanent medical record.  If you choose to get reimbursed by your insurance company, you will have to be given a mental health disorder/diagnosis.  Some clients choose to pay out of pocket for counseling services instead of using their medical insurance to protect their personal information and privacy.  If you choose to submit your receipts to your insurance company, you must be given a medical diagnosis, and once you have been diagnosed with depression or anxiety, it remains part of your medical record and can affect your insurance coverage as a pre-existing condition.  Additionally, insurance companies often set limits on the number of visits we can have in a year, some as little as 20 per year, and they also may require detailed treatment paperwork.  Sometimes insurance companies do not cover treatment for certain mental health diagnoses.  Some insurance companies require referrals from primary care physicians or assessments by psychiatrists. 

 

What Are Your Counseling Hours?  Do You Have Evening or Saturday Counseling Appointments Available in Fort Myers?

Friday appointments are available, and some evening appointments are available upon request. Slots fill up quickly, but may be available in a few weeks. You may choose to schedule 3-4 appointments at a time to ensure your time slot.
